Procedure of animal acceptance procedure in the Animal Shelter:
– According to Latvian legislation, any individual who encounters a stray animal is obliged to report this to the local government (A stray animal is considered an animal left without a home or without the care and supervision of the owner (with the exception of a wild animal). A sterilized and marked cat is not considered a stray animal , living in urban and rural areas near residential buildings.). The local government, in turn, within the framework of its funding, is obliged to take measures and place this animal either in the local government shelter or in the shelter with which the local government has an agreement (Article 8. and 39. Animal Protection Law Dzīvnieku aizsardzības likums (likumi .lv)).
– Support and cooperation with local governments is very important for the OTRĀ MĀJA shelter. Therefore, if the pet you find does not need urgent help (not injured, not exhausted, etc.), you need to contact your local government. The local government may also know the owner of the pet and take action without placing the pet in a shelter.
– The OTRĀ MĀJA shelter has cooperation agreements with some local governments. The shelter does not perform the function of clearing the streets of stray animals, as municipal shelters are required to do. OTRĀ MĀJA is a charitable organization and animals are not euthanized here in case of lack of space and an influx of stray animals. Therefore, we enter into agreements on cooperation, not on the provision of services, and accept animals into the shelter only if we have free places. In this case, the local government provides 14 days of keeping the pets in the shelter and primary, necessary veterinary services. The first 14 days at the shelter are also a quarantine period to identify any diseases the pet may be carrying, and also the time the pet owner can contact the shelter to reclaim their pet. After 14 days, the shelter becomes the owner of the pet and has the right to adapt the pet to the new owner. The maintenance of each pet (in this case) 14 days after admission to the OTRĀ MĀJA shelter is ensured through donations from caring people.
– If you find a pet that urgently needs help, that is injured, suffering and urgently needs special care, but you cannot contact the local government or they have flatly refused you, please call us at CONTACT NUMBERS (Contacts – Otramaja.lv) , and if we have the opportunity and space, we will definitely accept this pet and provide him with all the necessary help. In this case, the maintenance of the pet from the first days will be carried out through donations from caring people.
– Also, you can take in temporary custody healthy pets from the shelter, ready for adoption into new homes, in exchange for new animals accepted for quarantine. At the same time, the owners of these pets will have shelter, and you will be provided with everything necessary to keep these pets at home. We enter into an agreement for the temporary maintenance of healthy pets ready for adoption.
