We are pleased to announce that on July 1, 2014, the organization “The pet’s second home” signed a cooperation agreement with the Boris and Inaras Teterev Foundation, for receiving a grant of EUR 6,848.18 for the project “Sterilized cat – healthy life” for realization. Co-financing in the amount of 10% is implemented by Daugavpils County Council.
Project goals:
The goals of the project are: to limit the proliferation of stray cats and, consequently, to increase the quality of life of animals in the long term, as well as to increase the quality of life of local residents, to reduce the spread of infectious diseases between cats and humans, as several diseases are common to both cats and humans. For the time being, sterilization is the most humane way to limit the spread of stray animals on the streets.
Cats that live near houses and basements effectively destroy harmful rodents that multiply incredibly quickly in the absence of a natural enemy. It should be remembered that yard cats save the funds of local residents to pay for the services of companies that use poisons in the fight against pests. In addition, pests get used to poisons very quickly and the substances become less effective. According to the Animal Protection Law (Article 8, Clause 4 – According to the binding regulations of the municipality, the local municipality can allow the keeping of a sterilized stray cat in the vicinity of residential houses in the city or in a rural settlement, if its welfare and marking are ensured.) The project will be implemented in Jaunbūves micro-district in the territory of Daugavpils city and parishes: Kalkūnes, Naujenes, Sventes, Lauceses.
Project implementation period – 1.07.2014 – 30.06. 2015. We invite local residents, who feed and care for stray cat colonies, to enter into agreements on the sterilization of animals. Sterilization of animals will be done on a first-come, first-served basis. As part of the program, each cat will be registered, clinically examined, tattooed (marked), vaccinated against rabies, treated against fleas and worms, sterilized/castrated.
The animals will be provided with 24/7 post-operative care under the supervision of an in-patient veterinarian after the operation. We invite volunteers to participate in the project. Information about volunteer duties will be explained in person. Information about the project and contact numbers for closing the sterilization agreement – 29790219, 20045442.
