Since 2014, the shelter “OTRĀ MĀJA” has been helping local residents sterilize homeless cats.
If homeless cats have appeared near your home and you, out of the kindness of your heart, decided not to let them die of hunger and fed them or have been feeding them for a long time and regularly – that’s great!
But there is a problem that will inevitably arise in this situation. Your charges will soon begin to reproduce uncontrollably and your costs for their maintenance will certainly increase.
What can be done in this situation? There are several options for solving this problem:
- You can contact your local government with a written request to sterilize the yard colony of cats in order to stop their uncontrolled reproduction. The local government, within the framework of its funding, can allocate funds for the capture and sterilization of homeless cats. Financing the capture is especially important if the pets do not trust people and do not let themselves be handled. Catching is carried out by specially trained specialists who have permission and the relevant document.
- You can pay for sterilization and/or catching yourself or cooperate with your neighbors. In this case, you need to call the shelter at +37120045442 or +37129790219 to agree on the date and other details.
- If the local government has refused you, you do not have your own funds, and you do not have neighbors, contact the shelter “OTRĀ MĀJA” with a written application, which can be downloaded here: Iesniegums or fill out the online form. The application must be sent to e-mail: info@otramaja.lv. It is advisable to attach a photo of your yard colony of cats, photos of places where they feed and spend the night, rest, and hide from bad weather conditions.
Sterilized cats will be marked – the corner of their left ear will be cut off.
After sterilization, the cats will spend at least 1 day in the shelter’s ambulance under the supervision of a doctor and staff.
The stitches do not need to be removed after sterilization, since the operation uses absorbable material and hidden stitches.
